Gypsy Roma and Traveller History Month started in the London Borough of Brent in June 2001 and was endorsed as a national [England and Wales] event in 2008 by Lord Adonis, the then Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Schools, as a way of raising awareness of these communities and their contributions to society, and to offset negative stereotyping and prejudices.
The concept was first established in Scotland in 2016 by Article 12 in Scotland and local partners via an awareness raising event in Aberdeen City. 2017 saw the concept and partnership grow to awareness raising and celebratory events in Aberdeen City and Aberdeenshire. Following on from the success of and interest in our developments, Gypsy Roma Traveller History Month now has endorsement from the Scottish Government.
